I read an excellent book a while back called the Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini. It’s based in Afghanistan and the main character, Amir, is returning to his home for the first time since the war. During his trip, Amir spends the night with a family in their small, dirty, poverty-stricken house. As he’s eating dinner, he notices one of their little boys staring in fascination at his watch. Upon leaving, he gives the boy the watch as a gift. But later he sees it discarded and realizes the little boy had been staring at the food he had been eating, not his watch.
How many times to we give people something other than that for which they ask and need the most?
